Car makers Tesla and Hyundai have argued NSW's law imposing a road-user charge on electric vehicles may be invalid following a High Court decision which struck down Victoria's EV tax as an invalid excise, while urging the state government not to introduce any new road charges.

A judge has expressed shock that only 2,000 documents have been produced in a class action against Tesla over self-driving cars and threatened the Elon Musk-run car maker with a "a seriously bad time" if he finds the discovery is lacking.

Tesla can't escape a case by a motorist over his car's self-driving capabilities, despite overlap with a class action, with a tribunal saying there was no abuse of process while the driver could not opt out of the group proceeding.
